PSLE Mathematics Intensive Revision Programme

Tell me more about this programme.

The PSLE Mathematics Intensive Revision programme is a 5-day x 3hrs programme conducted during the upcoming June school holidays to prepare P6 pupils for the 2014 PSLE Mathematics Examination. We have been conducting this highly popular programme for the past 3 years and hundreds of students have benefited and shown marked improvement in their results.

The objectives of the programme are as follows:

1. Review of problem-solving strategies to conquer Challenging PSLE maths problems using the Conceptual Approach such as Advance Model Drawing, Remainder Concept (Branching), Repeated Identity, Equal Concept, Unchanged Total, Proportions Concept and Constant Difference. The strategies cuts across the major topics in PSLE such as fractions, ratio, percentage, decimals, measurement and numbers.

2. Review and the reinforcement of key PSLE Mathematics topics such as Percentage, Ratio, Fractions, Decimals, Algebra, Geometry, Area and Perimeter and Volume.

How would my child benefit from this programme?

At the end of the programme, your child would be able to:

1) have a better grasp of the key concepts in the PSLE Mathematics syllabus such as Fractions, Ratio, Percentage, Measurement, Geometry, Speed and Algebra. During the programme, we would review and reinforce these concepts though our graded worksheets which are differentiated according to the ability of your child.

2) apply the relevant and most efficient problem-solving strategies to solve the more challenging 3-5 mark questions in Paper 2. In the programme, we would review these strategies and provide ample opportunities for your child to apply it to various kind of non-routine higher-order questions.

My child has been been getting less than 50 marks for this Maths. Will my child be able to cope with this programme?

This programme is targeted at pupils who are getting an average of between 30% to 80% in the Mathematics exams. Our teaching and worksheets are differentiated to cater to students with different achievement levels.

For example, our topical worksheets are graded Bronze, Silver and Gold according to difficulty level. This is to ensure that the higher ability students are appropriately stretched while we reinforce the relevant concepts to the mid/lower achieving students.

Eventhough we welcome students of different achievements at Edufront Learning Centre, this intensive programme may not be suitable for students who are in the <30% mark range. Students in this mark range would benefit better in programmes which have slower pace and with 1-1 tutoring.

My child is already attending other weekly Maths tuition. Should he still attend this programme?

It depends on whether your child has been performing well in the exams. If he is scoring above 90%, he may not benefit much from attending this intensive revision programme. However, if he has not been shown much progress in the exams despite having tuition, he is likely to benefit from this intensive revision programme.

The PSLE Intensive Revision programme aims to revise and reinforce problem-solving strategies and the major topics in PSLE Maths. This would complement the child's regular tuition programme and work done in school.

Who designed this programme and who is the tutor?

The PSLE Mathematics Intensive Revision Programme is designed by our Principal Tutor and Curriculum Specialist Mr Yang and has benefitted hundreds of pupils since we offer this programme in 2012. Mr. Yang himself would be teaching this programme in June.

PSLE English Writing and Oral Workshop

Tell me more about this programme.

The PSLE English Writing and Oral Workshop is a 4-day x 3hr intensive programme conducted during the upcoming June school holiday to prepare students for the PSLE English Writing and Oral component.

Students will be empowered with the TRAITS OF A GOOD WRITING to enable them to generate ideas and write a powerful piece of writing under stressful exam conditions. For the Oral component, students will be coached on strategies to give a matured and confident response in the picture discussion and conversation.

How would my child benefit from this programme?

Many students are very apprehensive when it comes to writing a composition. Many also feel that despite writing numerous composition they will still get the same low or mediocre grade.

This crippling mindset will be changed by the end of the workshop. Students will realise that they too can write an excellent piece of composition once they are aware of the traits of a good piece of writing. Students will ultimately be able to write independently through the modelling and scaffolding exercises conducted by our tutor.

P5 Mathematics Problem-Solving Strategy

Tell me more about this programme.

The P5 Mathematics Problem-Solving Strategy is a 4-day x 3hr intensive programme conducted during the upcoming June school holiday to equip P5 pupils with basic to advance strategies to solve challenging and non-routine questions that commonly appear in the Mathematics exams.

The strategies taught would cut across several key topics in the Primary Mathematics syllabus such as Numbers, Fractions, Ratio and Decimals.

Some of the strategies that would be taught are:

1) Basic/advance Model drawing

2) Remainder Concept / Branching

3) Guess and Check and Listing

4) Repeated Identity

5) External Unchanged

6) Total Unchanged

7) Constant Difference

8) Equal fractions

How would my child benefit from this programme?

For your child to excel in Primary School Maths, he/she needs to master two important components:

1) Concepts

In every topic, there are several concepts that students need to master as stated in the Primary Mathematics syllabus. For example, under the topic of Fractions, your child would need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.

2) Problem-Solving Strategies

On the other hand, to solve the challenging higher-order questions, your child would need to be equipped with different problem-solving strategies such as model drawing and the unitary method. Problem-solving strategies are not necessarily tied to a particular topic rather they usually cut across several topics. For example, a common strategy is the Branching method which can be commonly applied in questions under the topic of fractions, decimals or percentage.

In our P5 problem-solving strategy programme, students would be introduced to different strategies to solve the more challenging word problems. The strategies are categorised into basic and advance (for higher-ability students).

Challenging higher-order questions which require pupils to apply these problem-solving strategies usually appear in Paper 2 which takes up 60% of the overall marks at P5 and P6. It is therefore crucial that students are not only equipped with as many problem-solving strategies as possible but also be able to apply the most efficient and accurate strategy according to the question.

Who should attend this programme?

This programme is specially designed for P5 students who have relatively good foundation in the basic mathematical concepts but are not able to score in the more challenging 3-5 mark questions in Paper 2.

Who is the tutor for this programme?
